Wellington Preservation Coalition makes a Splash

WELLINGTON, Fl – July 24, 2013 Many residents headed to Wellington’s Aquatics Complex Saturday for the first Wellington Preservation Coalition Splash Day.WPC Logo

Despite some thunder showers, residents were excited to make a splash of their own at the free day of fun at the pool.

“We met many residents who were visiting the pool for the first time. The parents and the kids enjoyed the pool and the slides, and it was great to meet so many new faces”, said the WPC Executive Director Tom Wenham.

Wellington Preservation Coalition, an organization that works to preserve Wellington’s unique hometown characteristics, sponsored the day, which included a hot dog lunch for everyone.

“I’ve already been asked if I’d do it again next year, and I believe we will since it was so well-received,” Wenham said.

Wellington’s Aquatics Complex on Forest Hill Boulevard at Town Center includes the Olympic size pool, two diving boards, water playground and two water slides that tower more than 100 feet tall.

Originally part of the Wellington Country Club, the pool always has served as a hub of gatherings in the community. The village of Wellington bought the complex, including clubhouse and tennis courts, in 1999. The water slides were added in 2005, and Wenham, who then was Wellington’s mayor, was the first to go down one of the slides.

“We’re glad that the Coalition could bring so many people together to enjoy a day at the pool as so many of us have in the past,” Wenham said.

“I applaud what you’re doing,” said Jeff Sims, assistant head football coach for the Florida Atlantic University football team. Sims was enjoying some pool time with his 8-year-old daughter, Sammie. “We moved here two years ago, and Wellington was the only place we considered living. It feels like home.”
