Wellington Presbyterian Church announced this week that the Wellington Christian School will be closing and put up for sale along with the church.

The private school has been located at 1000 Wellington Trace for about 30 years. The congregation said last month it would shutter the high school next year if it could not raise $1.6 million. At the time, the plan was to still offer kindergarten through eighth grade.

“We do not believe that it is financially feasible to continue to operate the ministry of the school,” church officials said in a statement. “It is very likely that there will continue to be major budget shortfalls in the school operations in the coming years, and the church would need to provide financial support far beyond our ability.”

The closure means approximately 550 students will have to find a new school and 90 faculty and staff members will lose their jobs. Parents say they heard a few weeks ago that the high school at Wellington Christian might close. But they never dreamed the entire school, pre-k through 12th grade would shut down. The school opened in 1981. According to the school website, the last day of classes for students is May 30.

The church and school would aim to relocate to an as-yet-undetermined location. At meetings with parents last week, church leaders announced that an offer of more than $9 million has been made to purchase the property, but nondisclosure agreements prevented them from saying to whom the property could be sold, leading to speculation. The church congregation must still vote on whether to sell the property. The sale would be dependent on a rezoning of the property, but no further information was provided.
